چکیده

Mortality and morbidity associated with Escherichia coli cause economic losses to the swine industry. Enterotoxigenic strains of E. coli affecting nursery-age pigs have become more difficult to treat because of increased antibiotic resistance, and alternatives to antibiotics are currently being sought. Our laboratory developed a defined culture of commensal bacteria of porcine gastrointestinal tract origin, maintained it in continuous-flow culture for 3 yr, and designated it as RPCF. Laboratory studies have shown that RPCFtreated pigs had decreased mortality and bacterial shedding compared with controls when challenged with enterotoxigenic strains of E. coli. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the practicality, safety, and efficacy of RPCF to protect nursery-age pigs in commercial swine operations from field challenge by enterotoxigenic strains of E. coli. In field studies involv

However, pigs older than approximately 8 weeks appear to be resistant to infection. Strains of ET...

Complete Genome Sequences of Two Porcine Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli Strains

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is one of the main causes of illness and death in neonatal and recently weaned pigs. Here, we sequenced the genomes of two ETEC strains that were previously used as inactivated vaccines in China.

Response of nursery pigs to a synbiotic preparation of starch and an anti-Escherichia coli K88 probiotic.

Postweaning diarrhea in pigs is frequently caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 (ETEC). The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of E. coli probiotics (PRO) in young pigs challenged with E. coli K88. We also tested the synbiotic interaction with raw potato starch (RPS), which can be used as a prebiotic. Forty 17-day-old weaned piglets were randomly assigned to four treatments: t...

CD45RA and CD45RC isoforms expression in weaned pigs vaccinated with non-enterotoxigenic F4ac+ Escherichia coli strain against colibacillosis

Since no effective vaccine is available for its immunoprophylaxis, porcine post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD) induced by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains remains an important cause of morbidity. Live attenuated oral vaccines have been suggested to be relatively effective in preventing ETEC-induced PWD in the pigs, but the mechanisms responsible for protection have not been elucidated. ...

Increased number of intestinal villous M cells in levamisole -pretreated weaned pigs experimentally infected with F4ac+ enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strain

Immunoprophylaxis of porcine postweaning colibacillosis (PWC) caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) expressing F4 fimbriae is an unsolved problem. Just as ETEC strains can exploit intestinal microfold (M) cells as the entry portal for infection, their high transcytotic ability make them an attractive target for mucosally delivered vaccines, adjuvants and therapeutics. We have develo...
